Lottery
Historically each student ranks their top three choices for rotations sites in the EMS computer system. The system randomly selects students, assigning them a site in the order they selected. If the site a student listed as their first choice is full, then the student will be assigned their second choice.
Most students will get their first or second choice. The Rotations Committee will put together a class survey to gauge class interest in particular sites.
WHEN? The lottery will happen according to the posted schedule for your second year (if you are reading this as an OMS I, note that this schedule may change for your class).
There are two cases when you would not participate in the lottery, be assigned or be automatically be given your first choice:
1. If your GPA at the time of the lottery/end of the 1st semester is 74% or lower, you will be assigned your rotation site. Assigned sites will be chosen based on the quality of the preceptors, structure of the rotation and a rotation’s overall ability to be a positive learning environment for students who may need a little more help. Please note that just because your GPA falls in this category, it doesn’t mean you will not excel in a clinical setting, this is precautionary so students are not left without support for their success. It should also be noted that the preceptors will know your academic status. Also note that you must successfully complete 2nd year before moving on; some students will start rotations late because of remediation and they can not all go to the same location.
2. Exemptions can be granted by a committee made up of Dr. Pera, Dr. Silberg and two students who are not affiliated with your class. A form for applying for exemptions will be distributed to your class, most likely in December. Appropriate and official documentation is requested, but is not required. Be aware that you may be asked to supply supporting documentation after your exemption application has been submitted. When the application forms are distributed, you will turn them in to the Clinical Education department before the deadline given to your class. Please do not submit materials before this notification. If granted an exemption, you will not be included in the lottery or will be given your first choice based on your individual needs.
Individual Site Schedules
About a month or so after the lottery you will receive your rotations schedule specific to your site. This tells you when you will be doing surgery, pediatrics, etc. You can sometimes make small changes according to the site you are at with your vacation and elective times. Know that if emergencies come up after receiving your schedule, the Clinical Education Department will do their best to help you make the necessary changes.
Note on Bay Area:
Each year after the lottery, those who will be in the Bay area will meet with the Clinical Education Dept and have a secondary lottery, including schedules for the various Bay Area sites.
