You will not receive credit for fourth year rotations until all your grades are in for third year. It’s a good idea to periodically review your transcript and to be sure your third year requirements have been completed. This will make your fourth year much smoother.
Fourth year consists of 40 weeks of rotations. You can do these in two week or four week blocks. We do not give credit for one week and three weeks will only count as two.
Your 40 weeks must include:
4 Weeks of Primary Care (FP, Peds, OB/GYN, outpatient IM)*
4 Weeks of Emergency Medicine (if completed during 3rd year, then have OB/Peds left to do)*
8 Weeks of Medical Subspecialties (specialties requiring completion of a residency & a fellowship)
4 Weeks of Acute/Critical Care (ICU/CCU/SICU, PICU, NICU, etc)
4 Weeks of Surgical subspecialties
16 weeks of specialty options/electives (research should be approved in advance)
If you are in doubt about which specialties meet which requirements - ask!
You can download the planning grid here Student Planning Grid which you may find helpful in planning your rotations for the year. You may do your rotations in any order you wish.
You are not required to stay within the Touro block dates as a fourth year student. Your main goal is to complete 40 weeks of rotation by in the above requirements by your date of graduation. Plan carefully, you will need time off for interviews, testing, etc. There is not additional time off for COMLEX,USMLE, traveling, interviews. (You are not expected to miss days of rotations to meet these requirements).
*Note: At any time during the third or fourth year, your rotations must include 4 weeks of Emergency Medicine and 6 weeks each of Pediatric and Obstetrics/Gynecology, (four weeks of which were covered in basic third year core rotations). The additional two weeks in Peds & OB can be straight Peds or OB - but they do not have to be. For example: You can do Pediatric Cardiology and it will count as a Cardiology rotation, but it will cover your additional two weeks of Peds as well. Same for Gynecology Oncology - it will count as a medical or surgical subspecialty rotation and it will cover your two weeks of OB as well. This does NOT mean you can do less than 40 weeks of rotations 4th year; you still need 40 weeks of total clinical time. This is not a way to get extra vacation.
